Details of experience:

Joseph first arrived at Manchester Center on March 14th, 2024. The patient, who had paraplegia (paralysis from the waist down), was hospitalized at St. Thomas Rutherford for spinal fusion surgery. His admitting diagnosis included fusion of the spine, muscle wasting atrophy, and the need for assistance with personal care.

Upon arrival at Manchester Center, Mr. Belton was greeted by many of our team members, including Rehabilitation, Social Services, Concierge, and many more. He was eager to begin therapy and return to his normal daily life. Our assessment of the patient’s needs included finding a good match as a roommate. We found just the right personalities, and Mr. Belton ended up with a few roommates with whom he developed close bonds over time.

When Mr. Belton was first evaluated, we found that his paralysis made him completely dependent on staff for hygiene, eating, bathing, and dressing. After being assessed by the therapy team, they created a plan of care that included core strengthening, transfer training with and without a sideboard, and safety education. We had a significant goal to support the patient mentally and physically while in our care.

Though Joseph was not totally independent when he returned home, he made significant progress during his three-month stay. He said, “The people here had become like family, and I was very well taken care of.” At the end of his stay, he was eager to go home and spend quality time with his significant other. We wish him continued good health and happiness.
