Details of Experience:

Richard’s journey at Manchester Center began on October 3rd, 2024, as he arrived for rehabilitation and wound care following two below-the-knee amputations and hospitalization at Unity.

Upon arrival, he was greeted by a multidisciplinary team, including Rehabilitation, Social Services, Concierge, and others. Richard was motivated to begin his therapy, driven by his desire to regain independence. Although he had not initially planned to join our community, he formed meaningful connections with fellow residents during his stay.

While at Manchester Center, Richard received his right prosthesis and engaged in therapy to learn to transfer from bed to chair and walk with the support of a walker. Upon discharge, he demonstrated notable progress, walking 100 feet with a rolling walker and right prosthesis while awaiting clearance for his left prosthetic leg.

As a double amputee, Richard faced significant challenges, but with the support of CareRite’s Paralympic Gold Medal Winners Todd Schauffhauser and Dennis Oehler from our Comprehensive Amputee Rehabilitation Program (CARP), he regained confidence in his ability to walk again. Through videoconferencing, they shared inspiring stories of other double amputees, motivating Richard to continue his rehabilitation journey.

“This Manchester Center helped me out more than words can express.” – Richard Johnson. We wish Richard good health as he continues his journey towards the best health.
